REVIEW; 'THE STOREYED HOUSE' OF WAMAN HAVAL

THE STOREYED HOUSE;REVIEW

( I found this story from the degree text book of Calicut University," Literature & Contemporary Issues" & I became fond of it after going through it,prompted to make a review on it)

Waman Govind Hoval ,one of the most renowned  Marathi writers conveys
a strong & heart touching message of a Dalit family through the
story,'The Storeyed House'.
This portrays the worst scene of the caste system, but a powerful
enrichment of Dalits from no where,a view of hope prevailing within
them.
The particular story plots a Dalit family man,Bayaji, the
protoganist, who returns to his village with the stuffs he had been
earning in the dockyard for 35 years. He wanted to construct a storeyed
house for accomodating more comfort zone in his family. This provoked
Kondiba Patel, the one of the land lords from the leading caste. As a
result,,Bayaji's house was turned into ashes,on the day of house
warming party,a symbol of the hegemony of the upper caste. The poor
Bayaji was badly flared up & he was no more. But,his sons started
building another storeyed house as per their Dad's last
wish, implicating never ending fighting mind of them.

Waman Hoval draws the picture of the caste-wicked society very well.He
frantically mixes the emotional element of a house warming function
being turned into a funeral.
The usage of simple words underlines it as a story of a common
man.Personally, story really moved my heart & hats off to the
author,Waman Hoval.
