'ODE TO THE SEA' BY IBRAHIM AL RUBAISH;REVIEW

ODE TO THE SEA;REVIEW

(I'm writing this appreciation on the context of the scandalous removal
of this poem from the syllabus of Calicut University text for
'Literature & Contemporary Issues'.)

This poem was included in the 2007 best seller,'Poems from Guantanamo'.

Author's image:

Ibrahim Sulayman Muhammad Arbaysh is a Saudi citizen who possesses a
controversial character who was held in detention camp at Guantanamo
Bay,a US detention centre off the Cuban coast for suspected
terrorists.

The detention camp at Guantanamo Bay is a mirror towards the violation
of human rights by US.Actually,a very few suspected ones have really
been proven to be terrorist & none of them has faced a trial. The
brutal penalty given to them shocks the World.

' Ode to the Sea ' is a brilliant poetic art showing the emotional
reception of a detainee at Guantanamo Bay.The Poet grieves at his
worse condition,conveys the message exclusively.

The Poem starts with a beautiful metaphor calling out Sea,' O sea, give
me news of my loved ones 'The Poet pictures the sea as a messenger. He
has 2 choices, either to reach home or to perish himself in the sea,but
he considers the present condition of being in the faithless chains,is
worse as a  hell. The mixture of the usage of poetic elements adds
charm to the poem especially the use of simile in the 4th line,'' Your
calm is like death ".
Words like sadness,captivity,pain & injustice,bitterness,gentle,
deaf
etc rectifies a wide range of emotions.

" Your stillness will kill the captain if it persists "
The above line in which he makes use of alliteration is really commendable.
The Poet shows his impatience at the distorting attitude of the sea.
The following couplet is my favorite lines of the Poem.
" If the wind enrages you, your injustice is obvious.
If the wind silences you, there is just the ebb & flow."
The lines follow a refreshing rhyme & emphasize on the powerful feeling.
The poet conveys his empathy on the situation of Cuba, demolished by US hegemony.
Ibrahim Al Rubaish ends the poem by stressing on the magical power of
a Poem that can sooth all the pains of an injured heart.
I'm not bothered about the controversial life of the Poet, but I'm far
more impressed with his poetic sense of ability that takes the reader to him.
