____________________________________________________

Kamala Das got married at her age of 15 to an old man.
Ghanashyam is a perfect rendering of the female spirit against the patriarchy.
Kamala Das was famous for her honest treatment of female sexuality.

The Poem begins with calling Lord Krishna,'Ghanashyam' & through a
beautiful simile,
' You have like a koel built your nest in the arbour of my heart.',
she underlines his position in her heart.
The simile is followed by a metaphor in which the Poetess compares her
life to a sleeping jungle before the arrival of Ghanashyam & after
it,excites with music.
Kamala Das questions at the silent attitude of Lord since every time
she comes near to him after being navigated,he vanishes 'like a
spectral flame',points out to the immense devotion from her part. She
contracts life as moisture with death as drought where the use of
metaphor & alliteration in the same line of 12th is commendable.

From the 20-40th line,Kamala Das is contemptuous at her situation &
synonymously questions the patriarchal hegemony of men towards
women, laments at the selfish sexual desires they posses.Reader can
make out the thirst of love of the Poetess which she didn't get from
her old aged husband & so,ultimately surrenders herself to the Lord
Krishna. Here,a spiritual lover can be found out in her relationship &
she has fond to merge with him as she believes death is the only
salvation for her.

" Shyam O Ghanashyam
You have like a fishermen cast your net in the narrows
Of my mind
And towards you my thoughts today
Must race like enchanted fish . . ."

I'm particularly love these last portions of the poem since Kamala Das
ends it with a sequence of similes which shows the submission of
herself to Krishna.
There is no rhyme scheme followed in the poem, but I loved the theme &
hats off for such a brave attempt !
