' THE PORTRAIT IN THE ROCK' (PABLO NERUDA);REVIEW

THE PORTRAIT IN THE ROCK;REVIEW

Author's image :

Pablo Neruda was a Chilean poet, diplomat and politician whose legal
name is Neftali Ricardo Reyes Basoalto. He's the Nobel Prize winner for
literature in 1971.
Colombian novelist Gabriel García Márquez opinioned him as "the
greatest poet of the 20th century in any language."

Neruda's Striking Quote:

" You can cut all the flowers but you can't keep the spring from coming "

'The Portrait in the Rock' is a poem written in the honour of the
Peruvian poet,César Abraham Vallejo Mendoza who became a victim of the
dictatorship of the state.
Neruda, through his poem, finds Vallejo resurrected as a portrait in the rock.
Neruda in the first few lines describes Vallejo as a familiar person
to him & he introduces his life to us,who was tired in Paraguay & left
all his assets & rescued to Europe.Later,he was caught up by Police &
was humiliated as Neruda underlines it through these lines,

" When he opened it,the police took him,
and they beat him up so much
that he spat blood in France,in Denmark,in Spain,in Italy.."

The fate took Vallejo to a brutal death,a martyr of oppression. But
later on,the Poet was captured by a Portrait of Vallejo in his own
country, indicating the immortality of the Peruvian Poet.
Neruda is so simple with his words & he conveys the subject matter
very well & succeeds to bring the image of Vallejo into reader's mind.
Altogether,I liked the simplicity & undertone protest against the
tyranny,contained in the Poem.
